Omnipoint® Communications, Inc.
Established in 1987 as a phone service provider, Omnipoint Communications was the first GSM (global system for mobile) carrier in the United States. It was also the first to offer text messaging in the US and between the US and other countries. In 1996, Omnipoint offered SMS (short messaging service) to Americans. Omnipoint's text messaging service helped start the 160 character micro-blog trend that Twitter would later popularize. Omnipoint was acquired in 2000 by VoiceStream Wireless, which became a part of T-Mobile in 2002.
