Pati Keadilan Rakyat (Malaysia)
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (the People’s Justice Party or Keadilan) is the product a merger of two political parties in Malaysia, namely the National Justice Party and the Malaysian People’s Party (PRM). The National Justice Party was established as a result of the Reformasi movement that erupted in Malaysia following the dismissal of Anwar Ibrahim from the Government and UMNO in September 1998. Malaysians from across the social and ethnic spectrum saw that event as political watershed for them. A group of NGOs and opposition parties then formed the Malaysian People Justice Movement (GERAK), before Reformists chosing its own NGO, the Social Justice Movement (ADIL). Efforts to form a political party however faced many difficulties from the Registrar Societies. Therefore the Reformists decided to take over an existing dormant party, that is the Malaysian Society’s Islamic Bond that was originally established in 1990. The National Justice Party was launched on 4 April 1999.
