History of SurveyMonkey

1999, the year of the dot com bubble. Talking sock puppets, a grocery-delivering van…need we say more? College junior Ryan Finley, working a part-time job, is asked to send a survey to customers. Easier said than done. Enter bright idea (It was the age of raging ideas, after all.). Ryan works nights and weekends – weekends and nights — to create a simple online survey tool, the first of its kind. A name. He needs a name. One that captures the innate curiosity and thirst for knowledge that makes people ask questions in the first place. Stuck, Ryan takes a walk to the park. He goes over to the children’s playground and swings on the monkey bars—reaching, hoping a name will come to mind. Swinging Surveys. Too sixties. Monkeys. Monkeys are curious.
