VoiceStream®
VoiceStream® was a GSM-based wireless service provider that was a predecessor to T-Mobile. The company was founded in 1994 by John W. Stanton of the Western Wireless Corporation as VoiceStream Wireless and began building its 2G network, using the GSM standard. The first GSM network was turned on in Honolulu and Salt Lake City in 1996. In 2000, VoiceStream Wireless acquired two regional GSM carriers: Omnipoint Corporation and Aerial Communications Inc. In 2001, Deutsche Telekom purchased VoiceStream and renamed it T-Mobile USA in 2002.
