Since the beginning of the nineteenth century the Russian Orthodox Tsar Alexander II, has consistently sought to marginalize the Polish Cultural and Religious Catholic conquered provinces of the Polish Kingdom
Harassment and discrimination against Poles by the Russian officials ended in successive uprisings. Last January Uprising of 1863 was the most bloody and most destructive to the Poles. Obstinacy of the insurgents due to the fact a combination of two themes for the fight:
a / defense remains Polishness
b / behavior and the confessions of the Catholic Tradition
For these reasons, pennants and banners of the Polish troops were often symbols of the Three Theological Virtues: The Cross - Faith (Fides), Anchor - Hope (Spes), Heart Burning - Love (Caritas).
Magenta background was the original color of the National Cavalry since XVIII century.
Lilies are a symbol of Our Lady Mary - the Queen of Polish since 1st April 1656, when Polish King - John Casimir in a grandiose and elaborate ceremony entrusted the Commonwealth under the Blessed Virgin Mary's protection, whom he announced as The Queen of the Polish Crown and other of his countries.
