Studio Azura

Brief from client

Specialized in brand marketing and communications, Studio Azura brings together a team of dedicated and savvy web developers, graphic designers, branding specialists and marketing strategists who are ready to collaborate closely with you from start to finish and add a wow factor to your project.

Azura is my design and web development agency. I recently completely rebranded my studio due to a new beginning (change of partners). I used wings in my logo to convey an upward motion towards the new horizons and an azure blue to tie it in with the name. This bird/butterfly symbol has a personal meaning to me.

Your comments are welcome :)

It looks pretty good to me. A couple of things though...
I think the two antennas(?) kind of throw off the design a little bit. It has the wings of a bird, but the head of a butterfly? I might tighten up the left set of wings a little closer to the body, but that's just my personal taste.I would be interested in knowing why the bird/butterfly symbol has personal meaning to you.
The second is the tail fading off into the white background. It doesn't really match the other elements of your bird/butterfly symbol. Have you tried a version where the tail emulates the wings in shape?
I do think your choice in typeface fits the symbol, with thick & think strokes throughout. Great start!

Good point about antennas. The symbol started with a butterfly and migrated into looking more like a bird as I kept working on it. The original logo (see attached), developed in 2006, was a butterfly and so I decided to keep the antennas (at least for now). It is migrating more towards a mystical creature with wings at this point :)

I also agree about the tail with a fadeout being a "loner" symbol in the logo. Yes I did try it without the fadeout, as you can see on my avatar I don't have the fadeout on the tail. I tried all kinds of ways to play with the tail and I'm still not satisfied with how it looks as a solid shape incorporated in the logo. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

Thanks a lot for your feedback, it's very appreciated!

Not bad at all.

My only concern is the composition. I would put "studio" below "azura" on the right, to counter balance the symbol. Right now, it's all happening on the upper left corner.

Good job.

I tried the "studio" on the bottom and it looks lost there. Having said that, I may try to put it on the right but above "azura". Thanks!

I would add (and this is why the thumbs down on typo) to tighten up the alignment of studio so the "s" aligns with the "z" and the "o" with the "u."

Also, your wings to the top side end in elegant curves and points where the bottom side end flat and farther away from the center. Unless there is a very specific reason to have a bird/butterfly hybrid I would just stick with a bird head. It's less confusing.

I think you have the makings of a beautiful logo.

I see the bird/butterfly comment keeps coming up. I guess I will have to consider putting the bird's head then :)

As for the alignment of "studio", I did align it with the "z" and the "u", I guess it needs to be aligned better? It does go beyond "z" and "u" but that's because the "s" and the "o" are curvy and visually occupy less space than the straight letters.

Thank you!

Hi, Nice work :) I do actually prefer your original design (i thought it looked more like a stylised, open beak than antennae) and think the bold strokes of the symbol would work better with a sans serif font. Either way I like your new idea too although I keep seeing a wolf's head (looking straight at you with almond shaped eyes and snorting nostrils)

I'm not as keen on the geometric font you've used though, the free flowing icon doesn't feel like it matches with such a structured/rigid font, but that's just my preference/opinion.

The only other comment I'd make is the placement of the text, as others have mentioned, is it your intension to call it Studio Azura or Azura Studio? If the latter then I'd definitely put the "Studio" below Azura, probably to the right and making it big enough to stretch the width of the U to the A would balance it out more. Anyway, great work on the symbol, the curves are really well done :)
