Brief from client
Time for a personal logo change. I went for something really simple and flexible, with a developped version.
Hand lettered, Illustrator then Photoshop for some slight distressing.
Further, and this could be splitting hairs (which is the whole idea of critique), where the Z coils and connects with the enclosing shape at the top, the connection does not appear graceful and natural as the connection at the bottom. There seems to be a stray point there somewhere or a tangent(?) that has extended beyond the call of duty. Its not a smooth transition.
I looked at the distressed version and didn't necessarily see "distressed," I just thought the lines were oddly drawn. There isn't enough difference between the two.
Okay, and maybe I am the only one to notice...is Putz a name that I don't know about? I am only familiar with the definition:
putz
ˈpəts,ˈpo͝ots/
North Americaninformal
noun
noun: putz; plural noun: putzes
1.
a stupid or worthless person.
2.
vulgar slang
a penis.
verb
verb: putz; 3rd person present: putzes; past tense: putzed; past participle: putzed; gerund or present participle: putzing
1.
engage in inconsequential or unproductive activity.
"too much putzing around up there would ruin them"
Putz is my last name and it comes from the flemish "put" which means "well", as in the place where you get water from.
It so happens that words with the same spellings exist in other languages. I knew about the Yiddish version. I watch enough US shows where it's used as a derogatory term by Jewish characters =)
But my name has no North American or Yiddish origins at all. But I'm sure you didn't intend to make fun of it at all =)
I'd like an un-distressed and developed version. My only critique would be that the bends in the u and t have a kink in them, kind of like when you try to bend a tube and it folds instead. Maybe a little smaller on the snail, but that's just me, I can't give you any empirical reason why you should do it. Nice job.
Edit: The Felix like post I was referring to is gone.

You tend to get really wild with this creative lettering. Is it weird that I found it more readable from the thumbnail?
The "T" is where I noticed a bit of confusion. I think it's the swirl that did it for me.
I might clean up a few lines here and there. The stem of the P and T are a tad shaky. Still, good job for the handwritten touch.
Also wondering if you could add a hairline border between the letters and the frame. Just a thought.
Well, it was made with the idea it will be seen on a screen (website, avatars, Instagram, etc...)
I must say that these days, the idea of using regular fonts makes me dizzy. Hand lettering FTW! =)
The developed version.
The undistressed version.
I like this version a lot more.
I like this version better.

I like the concept, but I'm not reading Putz, read Pulz, I think it's that curve Z which confuses what I try to read.
Anyway it is a good start =).

Origin
1960s: Yiddish, literally ‘penis.’
It's his last name :)

You handled that well, I'm sure you've had to make that speech many times.
You don't say... It seems my last name seems to mean something awful in any language =)
In French, it sounds very much like "whore"... Tough childhood =) They even made a movie about me.
Whoa, you're famous. They only wrote a book about me, no movie deal yet.
Who doesn't have a movie? I mean honestly.
;)
Seriously though, that is some crazy sauce Charlie.
I have one too!
My apologies. I wasn't aware that it was your last name.
Shades of Felix in that last reply.

"Shades of Felix in that last reply."
I was just thinking that..
'Shades of Felix' sounds like the horror movie to add to our list of people with movies named after them.
Even worse: "50 Shades of Felix."
i love the not distressed version! i had no problem recognizing all the letters
