You are probably going to get criticism for using an over-used pencil idea, I however think your approach is clean, well designed and can stand up to those critics. It may not be totally unique but I think you have made it your own. I think the all caps version is the stronger of the two, I like the subdued colors better as well. This gives me a good impression of what kind of designer you are and that's exactly what it should do.

I'd usually be the first one to frown upon the use of a pencil in the symbol, but in this instance, it's cleverly made and looks great overall.

Like Fred, I prefer the all caps version.

I agree with everything said above- clean, refined and to the point. I think it works! I also agree the rounded lowercase has a better feel to me. Good job.
