DirtRunner's RC Car CLub

Brief from client
Proposed 2013 Logo for DirtRunner's RC Car Club. The Club look has been stuck in the 90's for quite sometime and I took it upon myself to present an updated logo.
I wanted to accomplish something with a motorsports feel that incorporated the orange theme that they had always followed, thus the orange/red progression that is also loosely representing the "podium" which is commonly used to describe the top 3 finishers, with the highest podium reaching the checkered flag.
I took special care in avoiding any type of car silhouette or illustration because the club races 2 distinctly different race seasons utilizing many different types of RC cars and attaching them to a specific vehicle would limit the impact of the logo.

Not bad but too cwowded. Because of the flag in the back it is hard to read the drrc and also that font is hard to read anyways..I was wondering if it was a c or a g in the end.
I don't like the metal effect you've got going on, it's too busy along with the flag behind the font AND the gradient going through the whole thing.
It's just too busy- and I know that racing folks love the metal look and the flag and yada yada yada, but having both at the same time and a gradient and it all really close together, it's just too much. If you can simplify it somehow, space it out a little, etc- I think you'd be better off.
I agree with both sara and oscar. The metal trim is sooooo overdone nowadays. Everyone wants to look like NASCAR's symbol - which in fact, doesn't use metal trim at all!
If you MUST use a metalic trim do NOT use gradients. Gradients are too risky for printing in small sizes and your logo will look all messy, oh and its very expensive. You can pull it off with two greys, one light grey and one dark grey. Half and half, for the trim, a simple gloss look will still get what your after but modernize it. Otherwise take the trim out altogether.
Personally I have no issues with your type, but the flag has got to go. Instead I think just a striped black and white strip across the top of DRRC will be best and it will flow with your logo way better. Take out all the gradients for the color bars for simplicity and instead use flat colors. yelloworange, orange, and red, black and white should be your color palette with no in-between colors.
Check out nascars logo for inspiration as well. Look at how they use flat colors:

I like this even though the previous comments are very valid. My only concern is that the checkered flag gets lost.
