First personal logo mock-up

Brief from client

This is my own personal logo(monogram?).

I've used a fake name for privacy sake when uploading for critique, but my initials remain "CL". I'm pretty happy with it, and I'm still experimenting with the font choice. My initials are "CL", and I wanted to create something clean and minimalistic. Others have commented that the C is hard to make out at first, and suggested widening the gap to the right, so I did. (the picture you see is after I widened the gap to the right. It used to be the same width as the gap in the middle.) Be brutally honest what you think! Thanks :)

If your logomark is supposed to be a C, I would tweak it a bit more. It looks like a stylized head+neck of a crane, or a V.

Watch the leading on "Designs." It's getting too close, even if you want to design it that way.

You also appear to have an unbalanced arrangement. The left side outweighs everything by far. Perhaps tucking it underneath would be the optimal solution. You'll have to adjust your rectangle in that case.

I do like the minimalist approach. Just needs a bit of tweaking.

Thank you so much for the criticism! Now that you mentioned it, all I can see is a crane. I may just get rid of the diagonal line in the top left altogether.

Also, someone mentioned the same thing about the bottom typeface being too wide. I explained that the width of both fonts are the same, however the reason it might seem so far out is because of the Y. My real name ends with an E, so it doesn't look like it's extending. Although, I'll make sure to shorten it even with my real name.

May I ask how I would adjust my rectangle if I were to place the text underneath? The reason I placed it on the right was to prevent the composition from looking unbalanced, but I guess I was wrong. I could experiment with a perfect square in that case.

Also, how do you feel about my font choice? I have many others I could use, although I'm pleased with the ones I have so far.

Again, thank you for the critique. I wouldn't have seen the things you pointed out without your advice.

I've also included rough sketches of my design.

I would stay away from the ones with the full line through it, they look more like "B"s than "C"s.

Of those, I think that the second one looks most like a 'C', even if it isn't the fanciest.

Yeah, the second one does look the most like a C, although it doesn't really scream originality at all. I'm just having trouble using my initials, the ideas I come up with seem a bit bland. I'll keep trying though. Thanks for the advice :)

Leading refers to the spacing between lines of text, not between letters. That would be "kearning." I was pointing out that "designs" is way too close to your name.

I'll also admit, I didn't even notice that the "C" was in the white shape, not the negative space. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, or maybe it was ambiguous. Not sure. I will say that the more shapes you have in the center, the more people are going to look at it, rather than the bigger picture. With that said, the second "C" you created in your response is the strongest.

But yeah, just experiment with arrangement a bit. I still think the way it is now, it's very left-heavy. Perhaps try evening it out by enlarging your text. I'd try it both ways first.

Good luck.

Ah, okay, sorry! I'm not very familiar with design terminology. I've still a lot to learn. Thank you for clarifying.

And yeah, the more I look at it, I'm focusing almost completely on the negative space. The second C in the response is the strongest - but it's just so boring to me. I don't see anything interesting about it. I want a logo that will pop and be unique. I'll keep working on it. I have a lot of other sketches I can upload.

I'll keep working on the arrangement and see what I can create. Thanks for all the help!
