Moonglow

Brief from client

Design a unique and relevant logo for an Architectural visualization start-up.

I wanted to play with the idea of innovative and creative application of light.

Planet thing done in cinema 4D. lit and rendered with corona render.

Enhanced in photoshop and brought into illustrator for final logo design.

Font is Typonil converted to outlines and tweaked a bit to get the unicase style.

This caught my eye, but I have to ask, do you have something in mind when this has to function in a one color environment?

I am not sure I understand your question but they said that the design constraints should be biased towards screen / digital formats.

In fact they said they'd prefer screen printing on Tshirts as opposed to embroidery.

This type of design in screen printing will cost much more than a usual print- not sure if your customer is aware- as it would have to be a multi color or 4C Process print (which is not always cheap). This will play out the same way across all their promotional materials. But the fact remains that at some point a 1 color version will be needed- and this logo would not work for that.
I have to question the large black box??? It almost makes it feel like its a "photo" that you inserted next to your text. That does not work for me at all. However, I love the font (Thanks for listing the name of the typeface!).

You also have to plan on 2-3 hours in art fees for process or simulated process color separations. ;-)

I'm actually an art director for a screen printing shop. They will have to consider the number of colors present as the costs and minimum number of shirts per order, as well as setup costs, will be determined by the number of colors in the logo.

Every logo needs a one color version and, while the 3D lighting effects are aesthetically pleasing, it should still be considered icing on a cake. The core of the cake (in this analogy, a one color version) needs to be solid. Not referring to your logo here, but if you put awesome icing on a shitty cake you still have a shitty cake.

If your client ever wants to do something like pens or promotional products for the office or giveaways they will need a simple one color version of their logo. And, they may not be thinking of embroidery now but they may want to do hats one day or perhaps do some embroidered polos or nice woven shirts for their execs or management and digitizing embroidery with gradients is doable but the results are not always very pleasing.

I like your font and I think it is an interesting logo but I would like to see a one color version as well.

Very much agreed as pertains to production expenses.

I should have said that the client was leaning towards logos with gradients and lighting effects in his brief. Its also quite a small team of 4 individuals and a freelancer or another once in a while. So somehow helps with minimizing the production cost of the logo.

That being said, I will try and do some vector rendition of this logo and see how it goes. Thank you Jon for your feedback.

No problem. I run into people all the time who bring me logos to print and were completely unaware with the costs associated in production.

I really like the moonshape with blue and red. But the square round about the moon is unnecessary I think.

The lettertype is very nice! Also the design is a good basis idea! It is strong.
