Brief from client
New retail dog food product line. Premium price point, "exotic" Australian ingredients. "Outback" vibe.
Name not yet firmed up but pretty sure this is what they intend to use.

Making the continent a dog's head is clever, but it's quite a stretch–to the point where it's a bit gimmicky.
I would also suggest adjusting the tops of each letter to match the height of the boxes. So the O and K would be wider than the U and C, T and A, and so on. They look a bit rigid right now. Otherwise, I really like the look.
Thanks Killswitch, I was a bit concerned that most people would, like those of us in the industry, quickly zero in on Australia. Turns out, of the 16 everyday consumers who have seen the logo thus far, only one identified Australia and only after some prompting. Most tell me they see a Scottish Terrier (my intent) and some see a Great Dane or more generally just a "a dog". They're surprised to discover it's Australia.
Of course we're talking about Americans here so Australia might as well be Mars. ;-)
By the way, the peaks are a nod to another Australian landmark.
Regardless which font we use, I'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks!
Dude, this is a brilliant idea for the symbol. Though it could use some fine tuning, I totally got the dog/Australia thing right away.
Now, here's my main beef: when you a very strong symbol like that, why needlessly complicate things? I would remove that arch you put the symbol in and simplify the font work. No need of these cases you put the characters into. You could still apply that warp effect to the text itself, to keep that dynamic thing going on. But I would simplify this logo drastically so the symbol gets all the spotlight, fame and bitches =)
Keep it up!
Thank you Shawali. I'll craft a stripped down version too for comparison.
It took until I read the description until I knew it was a dog. I came in here to tell you your Australia was slightly off!
I was exactly the same waffles! i think there should be an eye added so it helps show the dog. I also think the collar area could be tidied up.
If you don't mind me asking, in which country or general region are you located?
I ask because I've yet to find one person locally (again we're talking about the U.S. and specifically the Northeastern U.S.) who sees Australia first, or at all.
It's beginning to appear that the novelty varies based on one's background. As designers we cannot help but notice it. Those not working in our field...an almost completely different result. I'd like to say it's simply a reflection of one's education or experience, but I've shown it to folks in education, finance and engineering with the same results. Pet owners especially those familiar with Terrier breeds recognize the Scottish and Welsh Terrier resemblance immediately.
Thanks for the input Waffles and M.
Myself, I'm from the Midwestern US, and I saw both the continent and the dog straight away.
I am from Canada myself, The western part.
Im from the UK, i saw Australia first but i have also seen this idea done before so after i while i saw the dog and what you were doing. Its not an original idea.
Hi M....I'd love to see another example if you have one. I'm always interested in seeing how others approach the same idea. I'm especially interested if this has already been done as a logo....not looking to create copyright issues.
To-date all I've found is a dog/cat west/east cartoonish sketch. Any insight or links to precedents would be appreciated.
This is a grand idea, I have seen the dog immediately and map of Australia, I hope to see soon the final version.
Greetings from Colombia.
