This is pretty neat, classy and memorable.

I wonder if it wouldn't look even better if you didn't see the stripes overlap on each side.

I don't believe they do. It just feels like a technique used in the 90s (a la AT&T) to simulate a simple object and make it fancy.

I also downvoted the color scheme because it contributed toward that antiquated feel. Not that it's bad per se, but it just reinforced the look I mentioned earlier.
