Softwear

Brief from client

This is the new technology arm for my current apparel and promotional company.

This brand will oversee all of our online stores and new developing technologies. Trying to get a good feel on whether or not this works for the general public.

From afar, I thought that the t-shirt was a mushroom cloud or something. You could simplify it a lot more and get a much more recognizable/distinctive symbol for that. I'd also make the t-shirt 10-20% smaller.

I had to really look to work out that you'd got the letters 'SW' as I only initially saw the 'W'.

I don't think that the font and the type in general is working for this design. The nearly touching 'F' and 'T' along with the touching 'E' and 'A' and the way that the 'A' overlaps the 'R' gives the general impression of negligence of detail (in my opinion).
The font - which is 'Code'? I own it myself, yet have never used it, and feel that it's a difficult one to use effectively. The 'R' pisses me off to be honest, but that's just personal.
I do think you need to change the font though.

The fact that you suggest the existence of the letter 'S' in the main graphic mark using negative space, in my opinion puts the 'softwear' type at risk of looking un-centered. Because of this use of negative space, I think that you need to be extremely careful in how you weigh up the size of the suggested letter above in order to centre the text below effectively.

I'm also of the opinion that if you look at the below, the following measurements need to be amended for consistency. Measurement 'A' needs to be the same as 'B' and angle
'2' needs to be the same as '1' - angle 1 being dictated by the angle of the letter 'W'.

Much of this just needs to be tightened up and look much more thought out, because as it stands, it runs the risk of not... in my opinion. It's a good start though and you could make something that works if done well. Keep at it! :)

I've been seeing this logo for days now and realize just now that's there's supposed to be a S in the symbol.

So yeah, it doesn't work at all. A good negative space can be a really tricky feat to achieve.

Also, the kerning is murdering my eyeballs.

Too many type weights going on here, not to mention too many poor type choices as well.

The implied "S" looks like two alien eyes (probably also because they are green).

All in all, it just looks like this is the one and only idea you had for this logo and decided to roll with it instead of developing the idea further. Unfortunately, it comes across as design laziness, which is seen a mile away 'round these parts.

Keep at it though. Do some legitimate sketching, then sketch some more and when you think you have not a single idea left in your brain, do another round of sketching. You will get there though, that's the good news.

quick thanks for all of the feedback. My client (i.e. my boss) really like the negative shape "s" that I created and really doesnt want to lose it. So, since he signs my check, its going to stay. I play some more with the typography. Straighten up some lines, made sure the S and the W are the same weight. I added a new element to the type, I think it may be to much but I wanted to try to pull some elements into the type so that I may be able to use that alone without the mark. Thanks again for all of the feedback! I have a new logo that I will be adding soon for some feedback as well.
