Brief from client
Something to do with a Lemon...
Not the usual BOTW work, But I loved this project.
Please refrain from typing the brand name, Thank you!
and hes back!! this is insanely cool! the only thing id say is that the text is hard to read in the thumbnail version so might be an issue at small sizes
Everyone seems to think this is great and so do I, but I'm confused.
I like this as an image/poster, but I'm not sure if it's what I would recognise as a logo.
Or am I being too traditional here?
Do not fret. Joe White has always many different versions of one logo in his sleeve. What you see here is a more developed version, but he has a more simple ones, yet graphically coherent.
All hail Joe Fuckin' White, the pooper of great logos =)
Thank you everyone for such cool comments! Your all too kind, especially as its a critique board. There are some small things to this design that bugged me a little, but I feel its not been picked up, so should all be well. :)
Thanks again.
Aw, Don't be mean to the ampersand. I really don't know what I was thinking while I was working on the ampersand, it just sort of happend. I did like it towards the end though, ampersands are quite free to have a lot of variation, so it wasn't a conern really.
However, my issue really was with the S in sour, but at the end I'm very happy with how it all looks. Attached are the S options I had considered.
Sweet. This typography is very well executed. I think the work in progress drawings are a great example of what it takes to make something this good. Thanks for sharing :)
It's a specific geometric proportion of sizes, areas, angles. Amazing stuff really... it appears everywhere in nature and mathematics, like pi. Artists and designers have used it for centuries, as it's very aesthetically pleasing, on a conscious and subconscious level.
That you've used it without knowing just goes to show you have a natural instinct for good proportion. If I get a chance tonight, I'll layout your logo and point out all the examples I saw. I'm sure I'll find more.
I really mean't as to where you see the Fibonacci spiral in my work? I've used the spiral purposely in other work before, but in this case it was never deliberate. The lemon has it I suppose, but I wasn't too sure as to where you saw this in the typography?
This is about all I could find that worked particularly well.. There were some other close matches but overall no real Fibonacci pattern.
I used to play a game where you had make spachips/planes, so I've had some experience with balancing out an aircraft...kinda..
If im really honest, when I see things like this it annoys me. I don't want this to seem rude at all, I just want to speak my mind.
Beauty/Aesthetics are all subjective. In this case im the subject reviewing my work as I produce it. If the work looks unbalanced, I will use my eyes to create a sense of balance.
I'm personally one of those people who cannot stand those big companies that talk a lot of philosophy and do very little to back up there bark.
I've seen lots of examples of the Golden Ratio, pushed on top of other logo's like the Apple logo. Claiming that a genius designer was paid $100,000 to come up with it. Its all lies and propaganda which I feel has diluted the whole industry. People think they can draw a fruit and cash in.
Along time ago an invention called the 'vinyl cutter' popped up. A machine that could cut out shapes quickly thrown together using the old corel draw software. This create a big movement in the 'design industry' where any old fool can get a business up and running for next to nothing.
Before that, you had to rely on a skilled sign writer and pay him fairly. This created a great industry where talent was king. There was never a need to explain why a good sign worked.
If I was to explain this job. I would just say that the typography is hand produced which gives this an original true crafted style. The illustration is also hand crafted and thought up originally by myself. The company sell various vintage products from around the world, more towards the luxury end. So to express this, I drew the little chap in the air ship with a telescope looking for treasure.
Anyway, try not to get too carried away in the why and get more involved in the how, it will all come naturally then.
Joe, I feel the same about writing music. I like rhythm dictation but could give two shits about musical notation. I use my ears for that. After all, beauty is truly subjective. Well worded rant, my friend.
You've got to admit, I put in a little more effort than just a few bricks.
This company, most likely charged through the roof too. Writing an interesting blog article does not make them a logo design firm.

Fun!
This is way cool, Joe. I love the detail. No "e" in whisky for this brand name? I love the fonts and the plate etching look you achieved here.
Each spelling is acceptable as far as I know. Each of the fonts are both created from scratch too. :)
Nice. I figured the spelling was intentional but it never hurts to ask. I've missed dumber things before. lmao.
If my eyes could have a bonner...
totally agree with that :D

Three sheets to the wind!
Сool. As always.

You don't mean the ampersand reading as 5 do you?
I like the little man in the first one, but after looking at the full project. The text is great on it's own.

One more images as im sharing secrets, this is how I set up the grid to create the typeface.

love the way you've created the handrawn font, work of a pro!
well done, you've created a very good piece of work. :-)
Golden Ratio spotted... very subtle, you clever bastard. :)
Relative heights and proportions of letter sections, word lengths and spacing, the curved letter accents. This can't be an accident.
Haha, I don't understand? Are you able to help out further? But no, it was all accidental as far as i know..
Allow me to enlighten you. Read this:

This is usually the sort of thing I see with the golden ratio

to be honest I also have NEVER used the golden ratio.
I just call it "The feeling"
It's a feeling you get deep down. Or that could be the beer talking. You know what I mean. *nudge nudge
Me encanta tu trabajo, soy admirador de todos tus logotipos.
Aunque en este caso me preocupa la funcionalidad como logotipo.
