The American Party

Brief from client

Basic logo for The American Party, a new political idea of mine. The key part of the design is the "A" inscribed over the star. I have a fairly good design background, but I'm not a professional by any means, so I'd appreciate any comments!

While the idea of combining the "A" with a star could be good, this isn't working right now. Strokes are usually a bad idea in general for logos. The stroke here is not helping and also is different sizes on different letters. The typography is very bland. It looks like simple stencil lettering. Try to explore some more expressive and modern fonts. The colors are, yes, expected because we are talking about America, but for me that blue looks too light. This light blue gives a less professional feel to the logo. A darker navy would be more serious and also more true to the American flag. I think if you're interested in exploring the A and star combination you should research some modern star logos. This is currently very flat and has no dimension. Look through some of these to see how playing with 3D and negative space can give some life to your logo. Also this is just a Google search, so don't think that all of these logos are good....but it is a good place to get some ideas to start brainstorming with.

Ewww, no. First, there's really no idea here, nothing to make it distinct. All you've really done is pick a font and type the words. Also, the kerning is way off and your line spacing is inconsistent. Simply dropping a star shape under the "A" doesn't make is a logo, and it's poorly done. See how the corners of the star peek out from behind the letter at the top and bottom? If you wanted to meld the letter with the star shape, then actually meld them instead of piling them on top of each other. Alter the A so it becomes a star, or alter the star until it becomes an A.

Your outline strokes are inconsistent from one line to the next, and even in the same word ("The" has a much thicker outline compared to the other test, and the "A" has a much thinner outline compared to other letters in that word).

Your color selections are off as well, you've got Red, Cyan and White (the American flag uses Blue, not Cyan), and in this order it's more like the Russian flag.

You should start over entirely, with some real ideas and develop them. A good logo isn't going to happen in five minutes. I'm not trying to be mean, in my critiques I try to look for something positive to say, but honestly it's like you aren't even trying.
