Brief from client
Nothing specific.
This is my first ever attempt at a logo. what should be changed?
how could I make this more effective?
My first piece of advice is 'sketch'. It looks like you've gone straight to the computer on this. Step away from the computer for your first hours work and just sketch and doodle your ideas. This will help you realise what works and what doesn't a lot quicker than you will on your monitor.
Next I would say try not to be so literal. Yea okay we can all associate a house or tool belt with the building trade, but lets try to be cleverer and not so direct.
And finally simplify. Your first attempt has way to many elements, and so looks fussy and complicated. Try to reduce down to the bare minimum. By doing this you'll get striking results everytime.
You should also try and soak up as much of other peoples work as possible. I'm not saying copy, just surround yourself with good work by other people for inspiration.
As Brian said, this looks like it's been done straight on the computer. It's also way too complicated, too many thing happening at the same time and the composition is all over the place.

Every internet user gets spam, everyone has encountered it in one form or another. If you do not learn to protect yourself from spam as soon as possible, you could have problems. This is especially true for site owners, as this subject can be more detrimental to them. https://www.seoquake.com/blog/types-of-spam/
