Brief from client
Open Tech Engine is a free and open source 3D game engine.
The three words in the name means:
* Open means "free software" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software), you can use it, browse and change code.
* Tech means technology.
* Engine means a framework, in this case, for making games (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_engine).

I think this one is a cool little symbol to keep in mind for other uses, but it's too complex for a logo in my opinion. This could be cool on brochures or a website or something. I like that it kind of looks like an organic plasma thingy-ma-bob ;) You're right that the layout of the text is much more balanced this way and while I don't think the font is bad I think there are other free ones out there that could be stronger or more striking for a tech company.
Did you thought to change the logo as a kite?
The shape reminds it very close.
Maybe one strip could became the twine linked to the lettering.
