The Tortoise Group

Brief from client
For my older brother on a new company which he is unable to give men more details on as its to be a secret, and desired to have a tortoise for its logo.

Upon asking him for more details, he stated that he wished for a detailed Tortoise, as I've managed to create a possible version.
This may undergo more work, but any bits that folks can offer to help is welcomed.
My bother has stated that the business is sort of a secret, so he may be unable to give me more information as to what it is.

The animal looks better, but as a whole it remains the same as before. Except the font is even more questionable by the way you bolded and enlarged the first letter of each word.
Mixing silhouette with line art is a poor combination. I would work on the font more and try to make a better representation of the shell by adding some detail.
I'd firstly question if a tortoise's neck is that long? ;)
Either way, i'd scrap what you've got and start again. I agree with Killswitch although I don't think the tortoise is an improvement. I think it's worse.
I think you need a different approach. Why not try a top down / overhead view of a
tortoise? It'd be easier to create in illustrator/corel draw etc and would look 100%
more recognisable, symbolic, balanced and versatile.
I've thought about it for 3 mins and my mind is ticking. There are many options. I've talked myself into wanting to do the project as it could be done so easily and with great results.
I'd focus on the graphic of the tortoise before adding type too. Get that nailed and you're half way there. =)
Keep at it. Don't quit!!!
I agree that this is looking worse than before. I'm pretty sure that you drew your curves on top of a tortoise picture.
If you don't anything about the company, which is a shame, it means that you have to come up with a kick ass logo, awesome enough to leave a lasting impression on people's mind. You'll agree that you are miles away from that.
Here's a example very close to what you want to do : http://www.pinterest.com/pin/99642210481713109/
And here's a quick google search of "tortoise logo": http://tinyurl.com/pt2svg3
I feel that you're lacking inspirations. These links should help. Also, you need to sketch a few dozen, if not hundreds, of ideas on paper before even considering using Illustrator.
Good luck.
