Its not centered over union, and I would stay away from the swirls in the symbol go online and do a search for abstract logos and sketch some ideas out I think it could be very beneficial

Maybe find a solution for the swirls, like part of a letter from the font. They should mean something even if its abstract. font still looks smooshed.

There must be a way to come up with a symbol that represents unity!

Two overlapping rings springs to mind for some reason.

Two of anything coming together. Two things relevant to what you are trying to communicate.. Come on dude.

I think you were on the right track with the Celtic thing. Just make it unique.
