Brief from client
Logo design for my freelance design company. Charity is my last name. I'm not sold on whether I want to do a symbol or a word-mark logo. I do live in Southern California so I tend to like the surf/skate/snow logos.

WAY better. The bottom one is the better of the 2. The mark is cleaner and the balance is better. If you use it on white.. I would darken the gray a bit. You might want to do some searching on it though... it's reminding me of something. Maybe Counter Culture? But, with a CC name you are going to run into that. I would check around to be sure.
Other than that, rock and roll.
Personally I'm preferring the 1st one of the two as I find the 2nd a bit dark with the black background. Have you tried it without? If you are (as your name suggests) doing work for charities then you want your logo to be friendly and approachable, and a black background doesn't do that for me. Other then that, great work!
Thanks for taking the time to review the logos. I was actually thinking that it might be on the dark side I will try as you suggest to "lighten" the design.
As far as doing the work for charities...Actually my last name is Charity. Although some clients really are a charity-case. LOL
I like it (1st one)......all though I think the symbol height should match the text height or vice verse. The bottom logo just seems pressed together...although you wouldn't go wrong with it either.
I agree the symbol is looking a bit heavy on the left. Thanks
The first, 'light', version is very clean and has a nice color balance.
Graphic mark is a bit too heavy atm.
I still think you should consider dropping this acronym 'CC' graphic mark and go for something different maybe drop the graphic mark completely and go for a nice word mark.
Don't get me wrong, lot of logos use acronym graphic marks and unfortunately 'CC' is quite commonly used in fashion & design industry logos, check them out here:

Thanks again splashter for your feedback.
I will agree that the mark is a bit too heavy I will look at it again. I also agree that the "CC" mark is out there in a lot of companies.
I also feel that its not 'very' creative. But it is a starting point. People that have told me that I have a really neat last name have not tried to make a logo out of it. LOL.
I will take your advice and maybe clean up these two versions and then go back to the drawing board with a word mark.
The first one looks decent. It's best to post just one logo at a time.
Everyone but me went for the top one. The bottom one looks like a skate graphic... after skating and surfing my whole life, that must be why I was gravitating to it. I think that one would go over in SoCal better... I lived in PB for a while... so, I know. ; ). I can see that as a sticker stuck up on all the street signs.
I feel like I'm going against the grain here but I actually dislike these and am slightly shocked by the rave reviews both these logos are getting. I really dislike the typography and feel its a bit lazy as its just been typed out! Play with it a little, turn it to outlines and be creative!. Colours are good although the grey is too light - looks like #999999 try a little darker around the #666666 region. Just my opinion though.
