Brief from client
Create a logo for an arts and media, mainly film related. Avoid the usual directors chair, clip board images. Wanted to suggest reborn as the school is being renovated into this specialism.
To get across a feeling of rejuvenation I have come up with a phoenix.

Argh, I didn't see this one before the sketched one.
I don't think it works as it is. The metal gradient don't have really any reason to be there, it's doesn't say anything about media and arts. There are also way too random. Gradients in a logo are a really tricky thing to handle.
The font looks weird, a bit flimsy and plain. I'd look for another one.
Strip this back and you'll have something here. Ditch all the gradients, outlines and drop shadows. Stick with block colours, even black and white, for a more striking look. This is over complicated as it is.
The text is a bad match too. It's quiet bland and doesn't connect with the symbol what so ever.
I also think that the size of the text in relation to the symbol is to small.
Just saw your hand sketch, it's great! Revert back to it's simplicity.
hate the gradient .... mark is way tooooooooo big .... fonts need to change a little ... in general great idea
I agree that the metal texture / treatment doesn't help. I like the symbol concept and level of detail (not too much or too little).
