Natural food company

Brief from client

A logo for a natural food company called Spotted Owl specializing in popsicles made with organic locally sourced ingredients.

My 8 year old nephew is starting his own natural food company called Spotted Owl; I thought it would be fun to help him with branding. This is definitely a work in progress and I'm not a graphic designer by trade, so any suggestions/comments/advice are welcome and appreciated.

This has potential.

Your 'Typing on a path' is very wonky at the start. That 'S' isn't on the same curve. Saying that, I would just avoid the curve completely. This logo doesn't need it. Just use a strong font and let it speak for itself, this one feels a bit lackluster. It needs more character.

I don't mind the owl, something is bugging me about the face though. I think if you mirrored the light brown shape and switched the eyes it would help this owl look more in perspective.

Nice colours, but you could get away with not having 5 colours. The secondary wing colour could go, and the text could be the branch colour perhaps?

Thanks for the input Waffles! I agree with your comments on the type on the curved path, I've gone away from that in recent iterations. I'll post a couple more versions I've been working on... I'll see what I can do about simplifying the color scheme also.

Also the spacing bugs me some with the negative space on this one. Like the space between the bottom of the owl and the stick is quite large (which I think works well), but then the negative space between the body and the wings as well as the head and the body are so very very thin. I'm not saying the negative space has to be perfectly equal in all areas (the unevenness especially at the bottom where he meets the stick is really organic and works well with the brand), but at least balance it out some. Give those super thin tiny negative lines in the body more room to breathe or get rid of them completely and make him solid.
