logo for a industrial designer

Brief from client
as a 1st year industrial design student, I thought I'd make a logo for myself. My knowledge of illustrator is gained through self-learning and internet tutorials, please leave hints&tips to make a better logo

What is it supposed to represent?
I cannot tell what am looking at, it needs to be re-done.
just an m and a w, which are my initials with geometric artwork which refers to industrial design
Ok, I see it now. I think there are too many things to look at.
you can use your same idea (initials + geometrics) to do a better one, try to keep it simple. Do you need the big circle and the box in the center?
the new version is uploaded, just initials and geometrics. it does look a lot better/cleaner and more represents my idea. thanks for the support
I like the colors and your idea, but the logo is having a hard time standing on its own. I would suggest accompanying it with your name and tagline to help the reader interpret the idea. Also as one thing i can never say enough it seems is really watch the spacing and fine detail of the overall piece. If you look at your outlines or white negative space make sure everything is uniform and has consistency. I love geometric artwork, but see if you can clean this up a bit and maybe even make the MW smaller in the circle, the whole thing kinda feels choppy and cut and paste-y. Good work keep it up, you have some good ideas, and if you continue i don't see why you can not be successful in this field.
There are a lot of nice things going on, but meshed together it falls apart as a strong logo. For instance, the repeating squares in the middle distract. The circle is too close to the letters, and the geometrice design in the letters themselves feel too complex.
Try going much simpler, perhaps just the M and W. You can make some nice geometric shapes inside them, but be careful that they do not fight with other elements within the piece.
I'm going to try making it simpler, there will be some new versions in the next few days/weeks (as this is a free time project)
Quick tip : Illustrator is not a tool for creation. It is for execution. This logo looks like you've just been doodling on the computer though you should do so on paper.
Not true.
Digital sketches work just as well as paper sketches, sometimes even better. I've met countless designers who sketched on their machines instead by hand. It's just a personal preference really. But the fact remains sketch as many ideas as possible.
Not true, and this is the example. With pen and paper you avoid doodling like this... Going straight to the computer will only work for designers with more experience. And this guy (1st year industrial design) does not yet have that experience. So its better to recommend to schets with pen and paper.
This.
Like i said its a personal preference. You don't necessarily have to pick the first thing you make from your digital sketches and continue on it. If you do that you might as well stop doing this field of work. So Shawali & Webhunter, i'm not saying you're wrong but even a first year can sketch digitally. Personal preference & work flow. Whatever works.
"Whatever works" so this is not working, i don't know why you gave 5 green thumbs but this is not a high quality logo.
This is a critque page hunter, even though the logo isn't finished or rough on the edges i don't see a need to thumb down something that could be easily fixed. Its definitely not a bad logo. By the way i don't have to tell you jack why i or why not i do things. And whatever works was on the subject of sketching not the actual logo.
Like sardines in a can =)
I like this logo! But i feel the oval around it is taking up too much space. Here's a suggestion, scale down your symbol/initials to fit inside the oval because as its now the edges are blending in with the color of the oval which i think wasn't where you wanted to go with this. Keep at it!
The other is getting pretty small so i will do it here ;),
I think we both have a different view of a good logo and that isn't bad thing
but this is not a "easy fix". but thats just a matter of perspective so im sorry that i aks your explanation of your thumbs.
Yes we have different views and like you said that isn't a bad thing. Thank god we're all different or we would all be making the same stuff huh? :) Thank you.
Also i think we broke the reply bar. The layout of this site is getting very dated.
Nope this logo is nothing, i cannot read the word, i have know idea what the square is doing there and the circle adds nothing. Indeed you have some ideas here but way to many.
