Brief from client 

as a 1st year industrial design student, I thought I'd make a logo for myself. My knowledge of illustrator is gained through self-learning and internet tutorials, please leave hints&tips to make a better logo

Purple also represents insanity and madness!

Also, I like the colours in this version better.

Much better Matthew. But i would take away the underlining. Like in Stephen's example. Not sure about his colors, but i think i like yours better.
